Kootenai County Department of Motor Vehicles

The Idaho Transportation Department (“ITD”) is the state agency responsible for the administration of driver’s licensing and motor vehicle licensing under its Motor Vehicle Division (“MVD”). 

Throughout the state of Idaho, the MVD services are offered at the local level by county government as follows: 

  • Per 49-401B Idaho Code, the Assessor in each county is appointed to act as the agent of DMV in issuing titles, registrations and licenses plates of motor vehicles on behalf of ITD.  
  • Per 49-314 Idaho Code, the Sheriff in each county is appointed to act as the agent of DMV in issuing driver’s licenses on behalf of ITD.  If you have questions about driver’s licenses, please consult the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office webpage or call (208) 446-1340.
  • The Assessor in each county may act as the agent of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (“IDPR”) in registering boats, motorbikes, OHV’s and snowmobiles on behalf of IDPR.
