Houndstongue is a biennial that forms a rosette the first year and the second year the plant produces a single, hairy, course flowering stock which can grow 1 to 4 feet tall with small, reddish-purple flowers at the end of the stems.
Mature plants can produce up to 2,000 seeds. Houndstongue contains toxins that are especially toxic to cattle and horses.
The State of Idaho designates this weed as noxious and places the responsibility of noxious weed control on the landowner. Our department offers advice on how to use herbicides and loan-out equipment to assist in this effort.
If you see this plant on your property please try to stop the seed production by pulling, digging or treating with herbicide. The houndstongue will soon be blooming and setting seed.
